Dominic Delivers in tight Division

Dominic Rimmy took the Under 11 Mixed gold with a perfect 8 wins out of 8 matches on Saturday 18.

Playing in the Cadet 2 Star Open on Saturday 18th January, Rimmy cruised through his qualifying group without conceding a set. The Championship Division was, of course, a much tougher prospect. Having beaten local rival Bethany Yang and his Clubmate Nicholas Andrei, he then survived a tough 5 set match against Isabella Xu (11-7, 11-9, 7-11, 7-11, 11-7).

This left him facing top seed, Fox’s Lev Samurov, in the final match of the day.

In a high quality tie, Dominic was behind for the whole match up until the fifth set. Having kept his nerve to survive a tight 4th, he found an extra gear in the decider to take the gold (7-11, 11-9, 7-11, 12-10, 11-6).

Lev had to wait for a 3 way countback to be completed before taking Silver with Isabella grabbing the bronze.

The consolation division was won by Jacob Dennison, with Colin Ho taking the Silver and Sophia Hessel taking the Bronze.

Under 15 Girls

The Under 15 Girls competition was an all Greenhouse affair. Played as a single league, the medals were decided after a three way count back between the top players.

Eventually Niylah Fernandez took the gold from Shnaya Singh on set ratio, with Shirley He taking the Bronze.

Under 15 Boys

The Under 15 Boys final was an all London Academy affair, with Yacoub Rahmani Walentyska coming from behind to win in 4 sets against clubmate Connor Godley (5-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-6).

Yacoub came through his semi-final against Kingfisher’s Soumyajit Dasgupta, also in 4 sets (12-10, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5), while Connor beat Adam Riadi in the other semi-final (9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9).

Under 13 Girls

Peterborough’s Archway players have a long history of success in North London, and they continued this by taking both medals in the U13 bracket.

In the Under 13 Girls Championship Division, Cindy Xiao took full advantage of the mid-competition withdrawal of her main challenger, Serene Rahmani-Walentynska, by winning every remaining match for the loss of only a single set.

Ruby Gandi Bamidele took the Silver by virtue of a head-to-head win over third placed Gaia Wong (8-11, 11-8, 11-9, 12-10).

Under 13 Boys

Jayden Xuan Chen completed the sweep of the Under 13s with a final win over Rafael Hanzel-Wacker (11-8, 9-11, 11-4, 11-1).

Jayden had sealed his place in the final with a straightforward semi-final win over Luyao Lu (11-7, 11-6, 11-4), while Rafael had to work much harder in a 5-set struggle semi-final against clubmate George Gaynor (10-12, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9).
